“Curiosity killed the cat,” is a famous saying. Why? It’s well known because the cat can also be mankind. Men and women are naturally inquisitive; sometimes their dire need to find the answer to something will lead to their downfall. In both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Hulk, the monsters are created due to curiosity.
Wait, What Happened?
Dr. Jekyll is a brilliant scientist, so brilliant he found out how to transform himself into another person (by drinking a special serum). The first instrumental event seen in the beginning of the novel, when Hyde tramples a little girl, shows blatant disregard of others. Dr. Lanyon, Jekyll’s colleague, said, “He put the glass to his lips…his face became suddenly black and the features seemed to melt…there stood Henry Jekyll!” when describing the transformation he witnessed (Stevenson 109). This quote, Jekyll, out of his own will, he has been transforming between himself and Mr. Hyde. He knows Hyde is bad. His alter ego carries out the wicked actions Dr. Jekyll knows he shouldn’t perform. Eventually, Mr. Hyde slowly took over Dr. Jekyll’s body, and this lead to Dr. Jekyll’s downfall and death.
In The Hulk, Dr. David Banner tries to create a superhuman. Bruce, his son, inherits experimental DNA from him. When Bruce gets hit trying to shield someone from being hit with a gamma ray, the power to transform into the Hulk is released. The Hulk has great speed, but is most notable for his height and strength. Unfortunately, while trying to protect the girl he loves and innocent civilians, the Hulk wreaks havoc on the city. By controlling his free will, Banner could change himself back to normal anytime. However, since it is difficult, Banner tends to remain the Hulk until the duration of his tantrum is over.

Should Jekyll be held Responsible?
Both Dr. Jekyll and Dr. Banner are similar because they are successful scientists. They were both able to control their transformations at some point. Dr. Jekyll voluntarily drank the serum he was offered. He said, “late one accursed night, I compounded the elements, watched them and smoke together in the glass, and when the ebullition had subsided, with a strong glow of courage, drank off the potion” (Stevenson 113). As Mr. Hyde, Jekyll did terrible things such as killing Sir Danvers Carew. The reason Jekyll is should be held accountable for his actions are because there are never any excuses in the modern. If something, it happens, and one needs to move on in the best way they can.
Is Banner Responsible For His Violence?
The same concept applies to Dr. Banner. Although he didn’t voluntarily choose to become the Hulk, he can control his transformation. His episodes are triggered by anger instead of a potion. During the movie, Betty said, “He just needs a chance to calm down!” As long as he can control his raging emotions, he should be able to stay calm and not do anything irrational. If a person can control one of their actions, they can control all of their actions. It is unacceptable for someone to make excuses about their behavior, because behavior is controllable.
What Does All of This Mean?
If someone drinks, voluntarily drives, crashes, and kills another person, that person could go away to jail for manslaughter. There is a reason the American legal system is the way it is. It is believed to be fair and to assure every person their rights, including the victim. From birth, children learn to be accountable for their actions. There is a reason kids get grounded for drinking and partying. If someone consciously knows they are doing something wrong, they should find the will power to stop. Only apologies can be made once the damage is done.
